Research demonstration only. Sewer networks and engineered drainage are not represented; no underground drainage or artificial drainage capacity is modelled. Not for emergency response or engineering design.

Map layers

Flood risk
Combines physical flood hazard with local population exposure. Each cell is scored by a risk matrix of hazard class × population-exposure class (WorldPop population quartiles within the study area). Cells with maximum depth below 0.10 m are outside the floodplain.
Flood hazard
Physical danger of the floodwater. The model computes the DEFRA flood-hazard rating HR = d·(v + 1.5) (depth × [velocity + 1.5]) at every time step and records its maximum over the event. Hazard describes the water itself and is one input to Flood risk.
Maximum depth
Maximum water depth (m) reached anywhere during the simulated storm.
Maximum velocity
Maximum flow velocity (m/s) reached anywhere during the simulated storm.
Population
2025 population count per grid cell (WorldPop R2025A), used as the exposure input to Flood risk.
DEM
Ground elevation in metres above sea level (Copernicus DEM GLO-30).
